Only the absolute top international artists dedicated to realistic drawing and painting may call themselves a Master of Realism.
In September 2023, the first of the very best realistic draughtsmen and painters in the Netherlands received the offer to become part of the maximum of 200 Masters of Realism. Among others, Douwe Elias, Tjalf Sparnaay, Ans Markus and Henk Helmantel have accepted our invitation to be part of the Masters of Realism.
Soon after, in early 2025, the initiative also gained recognition outside the Netherlands and the Masters of Realism Belgium started. A year later, in 2026, the international website www.mastersofrealism.com was launched.
The maximum number of Masters of Realism per country is based on the number of inhabitants, adjusted based on an assumption about the number of national artists who paint realistically.
